Calgary Shevchenko Event 2013

The Bard of Ukraine, Taras Shevchenko left a legacy of art, poetry and stories of regular people, elevated through literature, and remembered for their humanity.  Their hopes, dreams and aspirations continue to speak over nearly two centuries since his birth. In similar vein, the Ukrainian diaspora is collectively concerned about identity, freedom, Ukrainian language use, and its place in the Ukrainian idea.  A pantheon of great thinkers have been of similar thought. Nurtured on Shevchenko's words, his countrymen are a great nation with many gifts to share with the world.  But this is also a challenge, because he reminds that it is collective memory, the language, culture and traditions that bear the stories of history, perspective for understanding the present, and an image of what could be possible in the future! The Annual  Taras Shevchenko Concert is an opportunity to express just these types of ideas - to flesh them out for the contemporary age.

The Calgary Branch of the Ukrainian Canadian Congress is of such a mindset.  The 2013 Annual Taras Shevchenko Concert held on March 10, at 3 PM at the Assumption Church Hall on 7th Avenue and 6th Street NE, Calgary is dedicated to the idea - our language, our freedom.

Що То За Предиво! Оh! What a Wonder!

Calgary's Spiritus Chamber Choir just released their newest CD over the weekend!  Artistic Director Timothy Shantz and the choir have created an excellent recording music for the Advent, Christmas and winter season for everyone to enjoy.  Of note for Ukrainiancalgary readers, are two very special pieces of Eastern European and Slavic flavour.

The first of these is a beautiful performance of the Богородице Діво! ( Bohoroditse Devo!)  by Arvo Pärt,  the most prominent living Estonian classical composer.  The piece is a refreshing setting of the familiar Prayer to the Theotokos of Eastern Orthodox tradition - just lovely.  

The other is going to be a favorite everywhere in the Ukrainian world.  Що То За Предиво! (Oh! What a Wonder!) arranged by Vasyl Barvinsky featuring brilliant soprano soloist Nina Hornjatkevyc.  Her pure sound is just a beautiful crowning soprano over Spiritus's full choral embrace. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ev7yRgwJ9V4 Just beautiful!

Ukrainian Museum of Canada - Calgary Collection

The Museum was founded by the Ukrainian Women's Association of Canada in 1936.  With a great collection that presents the Ukrainian Canadian experience, this Saskatoon Museum is but one of 5 in the collection of associated museums, museums with a similar mission.  With 4 Branches scattered in the provincial capitals of BC, Edmonton, Manitoba and Toronto, Calgary is very fortunate to host the Calgary Collection of the Ukrainian Museum of Canada.  It is a very special gem of a museum.

Spirit of the Seasons - Suzirya Ukrainian Dance Theatre

One has to admire the positivity of Suzirya's approach to dance.  Joyful, enthusiastic, forward looking!  With one glance back into the folkloric traditions of Ukraine, and a grande gesture forward, the talented and professionally trained dancers of Calgary's Suzirya Ukrainian Dance Theatre (under the direction of Serguei Makarov), share the timeless beauty of dance.  I hope you will mark these upcoming dates in your calendar and join in the "spirit of the seasons".

Zhyto Band CD Release Party

Friday night is a time to be a booster for our friends in the Ukrainian Community of Calgary!  You may have heard of Calgary's most recent Ukrainian Band, they are great!  Band members Stephan Bots, Toma Lebedovich, Erik Smistad, Jordan Welbourne (yes he is Ukrainian too) have created a unique sound, a hybrid of sounds like Gogol Bordello, Great Big Sea, Mad Heads XL - УкраїнSKA / UkrainSKA, Flogging Molly, Vopli Vidopliassova.  This Friday evening is Zhyto's Home CD Release at Lord Nelsons Bar, with some Special Guests! 

Bring your friends and remember to purchase a CD for the parents!!  Or maybe take the parents out to the bar!!

They are also performing in Regina on August 25th at the Victoria Park, and at the Toronto Ukrainian Festival on September 14th!  Get your dancing boots on!
