Hart's Annual Summer Camp Auction 2015

The wonderful people at HART are again sending thousands of underprivileged children from Ukraine, Moldova and Belarus to summer camp.  And you can be part of this life changing experience for these beautiful children.  Children with special needs, socio-economic difficulty, street kids, foster kids, orphans, gypsies, and otherwise displaced children are welcomed into the HART summer camp experience.  The socio-political and economic reality of their everyday growing up is a difficult place to dream, and hope for a positive future.  And the HART program aspires to give these children a breathing space, an opportunity for dreams - dreams of a peaceful future.  Give them the gift of "resilience", contribute to HART.

On March 13, 2015, Calgary's Centre Street Church at 3900 2nd Street NE is the venue for a silent and live auction, a delicious Ukrainian dinner, Ukrainian dance performance, and live commentary to accompany the photo video presentation of HART's work.

Bar-v-nok Summer Camp 2013

Maybe it's the warm weather, or the fragrance of trees in bud, but it seems like summer already!!  Grass is greening, tulips are peeking over the mulch, and a day ago I saw a little blue robin's egg - surely it is finally here!

Parents love having the children home from school for the summer holidays!  After the rush of school and extracurricular activities it is a time to reconnect at a slower pace.  The lazy days of summer!

It's time to think about summer camps again.   Time to plan for the children to have an experience of a lifetime!  I know the summer camp experience enriched my life!  In fact, everyone I have ever spoken to about camp has nothing but fun times to exclaim about!  Some of us made life long friends through camping experiences, too!

So how to get the best of summer vacation for the children, a learning experience in growing up, and a well deserved parent-time too?  Planning for a relaxed, enjoyable summer camp in an atmosphere enriched with Ukrainian activities and companionship?  Perhaps you should check out Camp Bar-V-Nok!

Located on Pigeon Lake, Alberta, Camp Bar-V-Nok is well equiped for great times on the water, court sports, hikes, campfire and forest activities as well as nature crafts,  and a fabulous deck and eating hall. Bar-v-nok has a reputation for quality programming and excellent supervision, a wonderful combination!

Maybe I am repeating myself, but when is summer camp for adults?

HART Helping Children in Ukraine

Calgary is blessed with social services, care networks, and support for people who are on hard times. Whether unemployed, or caught in the spiral of addictions, fighting physical or mental disabilities, or victims of crimes - we are so fortunate.  Medical coverage, emergency services, drop in centers and shelter for the homeless - these are all products of forethought and humanitarian thinking. But it is very different in other places in the world.

With the collapse of "empire", Ukraine's early moments of independence in the modern era were filled with challenges, among them poverty, and spiritual need.  Personally confronted with the stark realities of Ukraine in the 1990's HART President and Founder Lloyd Z. Cenaiko (originally of Saskatchewan) felt the call to help his ancestral homeland. With the Humanitarian Aid Response Teams - International Relief, he has gathered similar minded change leaders to energize and provide resources to needy people in Eastern Europe- specifically Ukraine.

HART is again hosting their Annual Summer Camp Auction and Ukrainian Dinner here in Calgary on Friday, March 15, 2013.  The goal of this fundraiser is to help send 4,000 to 5,000 underprivileged children from Ukraine, Moldova and Belarus to summer camp.  Children with special needs, orphans, the homeless, kids from juvenile detention homes, and those in poverty could benefit from this mission of hope - with Calgary's support.

The event takes place at Centre Street Church - 3900-2nd Street NE, Calgary.

For tickets or for more information contact HART at 403-230-8263  or tickets@hart.ca

More Ukrainian Summer Camps!

For an excellent experience with an excellent artist-educator, you just can't beat summer camp with Larisa!  She is a wonderful Canadian artist of Ukrainian ancestry whose career has blossomed - and I am not even exaggerating.  She loves flowers, and with her extensive knowledge of ancestral Ukrainian culture, folklore and folk remedies, she is able to convey multiple layers of meaning in her wonderful watercolor paintings.  Drama, subtle and sensitive images of moments in culture, moments in history, a social commentary that has brought her artistry acclaim and international recognition. Her beautiful art works hold a special place in private and corporate collections throughout North and South America, Australia, and Europe.

Exploring Ukrainian folklore through dance, drama, art and cooking, she has a unique message for all young people - don't you wish she would teach adults too? She is partnering with St. John's Institute in Edmonton to present summer day camps for children ages 6-12 this August.  Maybe it's time to visit family or friends in Edmonton for the week and register the kids for Art by Larisa's Ukrainian Summer Camp!

Both my daughters participated in Ukrainian dancing, but it seems I missed the Southern Alberta Ukainian Dance Festival this year!  In the past I recall great performances, super adjudicators, family and friends all there to pass on a love of Ukrainian dance, a love of Ukrainian culture, the community of Ukrainian friends!  Even now one of my daughters' friends is a girl she danced with a while back.
The story goes this way.  My daughter and her friend were the silly girls in Ukrainian dancing, couldn't stop talking.  Had fun!  Enjoyed the learning, but really enjoyed the company.  So they danced into their teens, but couldn't remember when they met.  My daughter was looking at photos from when she was very little.  Turns out this friend was a little girl from my daughter's first Ukrainian dancing lessons, when she was a preschooler!  Turns out that the friendships you make through Ukrainian dancing are frequently the ones that follow you through life.
If you haven't yet filled your August with Ukrainian Camp ideas, here is another one that is sure to please your young Ukrainian Dancer!!  ALTANETS'!  For summer dance workshops featuring exceptionally qualified dance teachers from Ukraine, this is Alberta's tops!  Teachers are members of this Canadian Ukrainian Dance Academy (http://www.cudacademy.com/) with a proven dance curriculum, and leveled programs for growth in dancing ability!   Alberta Ukrainian Dance Association (http://www.abuda.ca/) again presents its annual Ukrainian Summer Dance Program.  Workshops to improve technique, learn about the dance styles of various regions and styles, and learn about the Art Form that is Ukrainian Dance in Canada!!

Meeting other Ukrainian dancers from across Alberta and the provinces of Canada, enjoying Ukrainian dancing together - what fun!  The cultural program includes crafts, songs, and fun activities to help dancers capture the Ukrainian spirit in a Canadian setting!

Alberta's Ukrainian Summer Camp Season 2012

life.nationalpost.com
Summer camp as a Ukie kid in Alberta was always an interesting experience.  The excitement of going to camp with your friends really overshadowed the fact that the whole summer was summer vacation!  Packing involved leaving all the trappings of "living in a house" and meant roughing it a bit.  Have to admit that the "biffy" days are over for kids these days, but there is still a lot to be gained from the outdoor summer camp experience.

For one thing, there are never enough hours to tell the stories of summer camp. Once you start telling camp stories, you might just as well .....well, maybe it is time for your children to experience the Ukie camp thing in Alberta - here are a few to choose from.
